GPS Vehicle Tracking Systems - Why Companies Use Them
GPS vehicle tracking systems have many uses for companies and with the advancement in technology, and the subsequent reduction in prices, they are now within the price range of smaller companies as well.
GPS vehicle tracking systems combine a cellular phone transmitter, a GPS receiver and specialist software into a single gadget known as a GPS vehicle tracking device. When the device is connected to a server through the cellular telephone network, the system allows you to track any number of vehicle movements in real time.
Return on investment was always the limiting factor to how GPS tracking was used; when prices were much higher, it took a substantial amount of time for a company to see the cost benefits from installing GPS vehicle trackers in their fleets, as prices have fallen and the units have become more user-friendly, it is not unusual to see units paying for themselves outright within six months.
Depending on your type of business the advantage of using GPS trackers will vary, however there seems to be a consensus as to the main benefits for businesses as a whole:
1. Productivity - after installation, many companies report increased productivity from employees who use company vehicles. The areas seeing the greatest increases in productivity are overtime claims, travelling times between customer’s locations, time spent at customer’s location, reduced lunch breaks and personal use of the company’s vehicles.
2. Customer service - use of these systems have allowed many companies to offer more flexible support services to their customers. Knowing where all their support engineers are at any given time means they are able to give much more accurate arrival times and also allows a company to divert the nearest engineer in the event of an emergency call out.
3. Reduced insurance costs - when trackers are fitted to your fleet of vehicles, not only will it allow you to know where all your vehicles are, but you will also be able to identify which of your employees are the safest drivers and whose driving is likely to cause most damage to your property. If a vehicle is stolen, your chances of retrieving it are greatly increased and this, along with a data readout of your employees driving habits, if presented to your insurers should see a big reduction in your insurance costs.
4. Vehicle usage - you might be surprised at the number of unnecessary journeys made in company vehicles, or you might have vehicles that spend most of the week doing very little. Either way, fitting GPS vehicle trackers allows you to monitor each vehicle’s usefulness and report on an optimum number of vehicles needed.
Fitting GPS vehicle tracking systems will not be universally welcomed; many employees feel they are being spied on, so it is important to weigh the advantages and disadvantages before making a final decision. Many companies are seeing that GPS systems pay for themselves within six to twelve months at the longest, and if you unfortunate enough to have a vehicle stolen and you manage to retrieve it, the system will have paid for itself much sooner.
